Diabetes Diagnosis and Blood Glucose Levels

Diabetes diagnosis is made by simple diabetes blood glucose test, either fasting, random or post prandial.

Fasting blood glucose level is checked when you have been without food or drink for ten to twelve hours.  The fasting blood glucose level for a person without diabetes is considered to be between 3.5 and 5.9 mmol/litre.

A random test is done at any time regardless of whether you have eaten or not. Random blood glucose levels for a person without diabetes is considered to be less than 7.8 mmol/litre.

Post prandial blood glucose levels is taken two hours after eating.

Warning Sign of Diabetes

Diabetes diagnosis criteria are stricter depending on the presence of diabetic symptoms or diabetic risk factor.  The following diabetes diagnosis criteria are used to determine warning sign of diabetes :

Diabetes Blood Glucose Test

There are a variety of other diabetes blood glucose test available where further testing is needed to confirm a diabetes diagnosis.  One test is the glucose tolerance test where a fasting blood glucose test is performed, then 75g of glucose is given orally and further blood samples tested one and two hours afterwards. 

 

Diabetic Symptoms

Diabetes has been dubbed as the "silent killer"  as most people with Type 2 diabetes are unaware or experience no diabetic symptoms until diagnosed with one of diabetes life threatening health complications.

  • Frequent Urination
  • Increased thirst
  • Increased appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Any of Type 1 diabetic symptoms
  • Frequent infections
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow healing wounds
  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
  • Recurring skins, gum or bladder infections
