If your have diabetes, fiber is your friend.  High fiber food slows down the speed of digestion of carbohydrate in the stomach resulting in a more stable  blood sugar level.

Diabetic Diet - Recommended Daily Fiber Intake

If you're under the age of 50, experts recommend getting 25 grams of fiber a day for women and 38 grams of fiber for men.

Over the age of 50 the recommendation drops to 21 grams for women and 30 grams for men.

The first step is to increase the number of high fiber food (containing five or more grams of fiber per serving) in your daily diabetic diet.  Following the "five a day" rule of eating food high in fiber - eating five of more fruits and vegetables is a good place to start.

If your doctor does recommend a high fiber supplement, here are some diabetic diet  high fiber supplement guidelines.

  • Pick a high fiber supplement product that is sugar-free
  • In case of a powder fiber supplement, mix the fiber supplement with water or juice
  • Most important - increase your fiber intake gradually - regardless of whether you're getting it from dietary fiber, high fiber supplement or a combination of the two.  Sudden increases in high fiber rich food can cause bloating, gas or diarrhea.
  • Don't take more than 50 grams of fiber a day.  Eating too much high fiber food may prevent your body from absorbing all the vitamins and minerals it needs.
